How to Finish Them

Most pieces ship unfinished. Seal the raw MDF with a coat of primer or gesso first — it stops the colour sinking in unevenly — then build acrylic paint in two thin coats rather than one thick one. Gold and deep red is the traditional pairing and catches diya light well; gold on natural wood is the more contemporary look. Finish with a matte or gloss varnish so the piece survives storage and can be reused next Diwali.

For Lippan-style work, press mirrors into clay directly onto the sealed surface. The MDF is thick enough to hold the weight without warping.

Do these come painted or unfinished?
Most Shubh Labh cutouts ship unfinished in natural Pine MDF, ready for you to paint or decorate. A few designs are available pre-finished — the product page states which.

What size should I choose for a main door?
For a standard Indian main door, an 8 to 10 inch pair reads well from across a courtyard. Go to 12 inch for a wide entrance or a housing-society gate, and 4 to 6 inch for pooja room shelves and mandir units.

Can I hang these outdoors?
They are suited to covered entrances, porches and balconies. MDF is not rated for direct rain exposure, so seal it well with varnish and keep it under an overhang.

How far before Diwali should I order?
Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Order by 25 October for delivery before Diwali, and three to four weeks ahead if you plan to prime, paint and varnish — each coat needs drying time.
